We’re still on project phase , without knowing masses of detail about the project I don’t have much to write. So I thought I’d share some stuff about the Ladakhi people (the area of India we are in)
In Leh if someone offers you something it is considered polite to to Dzangs, that is to refuse it 2/3 times before accepting. If I am giving a present to a local person they’re likely to refuse more times before accepting which is a lot of hassle so it was advised to just leave it on the table for them.
Feet are considered offensive. If you’re sat with your feet pointing towards a person, food , or religious object that is the height of bad manners.
You tend to eat sat on the floor, if you step over food, it get’s thrown away simply.
I don’t really know how to summarise today so I’ll copy straight from the itenerary:
Travel from Delhi to Leh. Today you’ll fly over the magnificent Himalayan mountains to reach Leh in Ladakh, known as ‘the roof of the world’. Make your way to the airport in good time for your flight, and take note that you need the domestic (rather than international) airport. On arrival in Leh find somewhere to stay and meet with your In-Country Agent to discuss your project and trek. Use today to prepare for your project phase and buy any materials and supplies you may need. You should also make sure you’ve arranged your onward transport to Delhi and make preparations for your rest and relaxation plans. Leh is nestled in the Himalayas and sits at a breathtaking 3,505m above sea level, so you’ll need to rest and drink plenty of water as you’ll be feeling the altitude.
Today is build up day , we’ll spend the day at school sorting the group gear , having a final run through of plans and some more team building stuff. We go by coach to Heathrow airport to fly out to Delhi at 20:45.
Flight number: 9w121
Delhi is 5.5 hours ahead of London and the flight is about 7.5 hours.
They asked me what I thought about equal opportunities and how good scouting was at it , I decided to bite my tongue on the atheism issue so they didn’t refuse me and just talked about women and disabeled kids.
I’m planning to write some letters to head quarters and the british humanist association etc about the atheism issue, see if we can get something changed.
On thursday I go and have a meeting with the scouts district appointments commitee , basically it’s an interview panel to make sure I’m right to be a leader etc.
Part of it is that I have to understand the basic aims and principals of the scout association , and what the role I’m going for entails. So I did some research. Essentially scouting in the UK is governed by POR (Policy Organisation Rules), it’s like a constitution I guess. Rule 2.1 says that:
no person volunteering their services should receive less favourable treatment on the basis of, nor suffer disadvantage by reason of:
ethnic origin, nationality (or statelessness) or race;
marital or sexual status;
mental or physical ability;
political or religious belief.
And yet as an extra note it says: With reference to religious belief, the avowed absence of religious belief is a bar to appointment to a Leadership position.
As a Humanist (Which I would define as to be an absence of religious beliefs.) I’m intrigued to know how it can be stated that people will receive no disadvantage on the grounds of political or religious beliefs and yet in the same paragraph bar atheists from becoming scout leaders?
Why is that Christians, Muslims, Jews etc are treated as equal in the eyes of the scout association and yet atheists are deemed to be unsuitable as leaders. I dearly want to become a scout leader to give something back to a fantastic movement that has given me so much , but I refuse to do this under the false pretense of being religious.
Reading this has severely shaken my faith in scouting as a body open to all and based on the principal of anyone can achieve irrespective of beliefs, nationality , gender etc.
Why is this ? Why can’t I be a humanist and a scout leader ? In case I force by evil beliefs upon a child ? Has it not occurred that a christian is just as likely to try and convert a Muslim child as I am. That’s saying, we don’t care what god you believe in , but if you don’t believe in a god that’s wrong.
Top right of the page click on the name of your blog. On the right hand side where it says followers underneath that it says queue. You can choose how many posts a day. I’m aiming for two a day whilst I’m away
But eating disorders are a mental disorder. The girls never chose it to be this way, society is in the wrong for pushing this image. Not the girls for seeking comfort in thinspo and using it to help them feel better.
Things where people have been badly disfigured , or maybe they had a breast removed due to cancer etc. Then that is a good thing because it allows people to live normally without social stigmas.
For vanity I can’t understand. It rarely looks good anyway. I don’t really understand vanity at all tbh. I’m not greatly interested in how I look as long as I’m clean and my clothes aren’t falling to bits i’m cool.
I think it’s disgusting personally. But I’ve never felt the need to do it, so I can’t really understand the motivations behind. I daresay it’s not much different to people who drink lots when they’ve had a bad time.
I think the argument about it can be attention seeking is true. For some. Not all , there are some that cut just purely because it helps.
Although I’m feeling a bit sick after thinking on this topic now.
So yesterday I started talking to a girl from my school
I’d always seen her around school (truth be told found her gorgeous but that’s not relevant) anyways we got chatting yesterday. She asked to hear my life story, I was like wtf ? why does anyone give a crap about what I’ve done. So I told her a bit and she seemed truly interested and really supportive when I said about dad having parkinson’s disease. Later on it transpired her life was less smooth. So I decided I had to add a thing to gives me hope.
I’ll star her name out just incase but it said
********: The fact you feel you have to self harm to cope and are probably bi polar. And yet you offer an ear and your support to a guy you barely know when you hear his father is ill. Your inner strength and selflessness GMH
Day 13 - do you think there should be an age to get tattoos/ piercings without parental consent.
Well you can’t have sex until 16 , drive until 17 , or vote until 18.
So either 16/17/18 by that age most people are mature enough to make the right decision. The problem comes when people with controlling parents do it purely as an act of rebellion. But that’s not my problem.
ah i know :/ our leaders were complaining cos you can hardly do any of the activities unless its totally empty of explorers! so you're left with all the rubbish ones really! but you should come as service crew and take some time out to come give people free hugs! no-one will notice ;D
Well that’s true. I’ll just cover my pass that says 18.
